A geography, not a border

Silbûs û Tarî is a design studio working with the highlands between Dersim and Bingöl in eastern Turkey. Mountain outlines, cacım weaving motifs and map coordinates are engraved into metal and glass in limited runs.

The brand takes its name from two mountains. What sits between them — the ridges, the valleys, the flatweaves, the shared memory — is where the collections come from.

What we are not doing is making souvenirs. The easy version of this work is to print a province name on a mug and call it regional. The harder version, and the only one worth doing, is to take the line of a place and put it on something you use every day without turning it into a cliché.

There is one rule we hold to, and it costs us content. We do not publish claims about this region that we cannot source. How high a mountain is, where a name comes from, what a motif is supposed to mean — there are many conflicting accounts, and putting an unsourced sentence next to a product would be unfair to the thing being described. Some of our pages are shorter than they could be for exactly this reason. They will grow as the sources do.
